    Integrated design checkout of shuttle payload avionics interfaces

    Orbiter/payload avionics integration testing in the shuttle program are discussed. Payloads show extensive orbiter interfaces. The three testing modes used to verify orbiter/payload avionics interfaces are described. These modes consist of orbiter testing using generic payload simulators, payload testing utilizing the actual payload and a high fidelity orbiter simulator, and interface testing with the actual orbiter and payload. Several special avionics techniques, such as the split flight computer technique were developed for this testing. Experience from the first six shuttle cargoes is reviewed and problems found in testing that would have hampered mission success are emphasized

    Decision Support Model for Municipal Solid Waste Management at Department of Defense Installations

    This research focuses on the development of a decision support model to identify the preferred strategy for managing municipal solid waste using the principles of decision analysis theory. The model provides an effective decision making tool to evaluate and compare different municipal solid waste management strategies. The users of this model, the Environmental Manager or decision maker at a given installation, can enter installation-specific waste stream characteristics, treatment and disposal costs, and material buy-back prices to determine the expected value for various alternative strategies. The strategy having the greatest expected value is considered the preferred alternative. In calculating the expected value of a strategy, the economic cost, social cost, and waste diversion from the landfill are evaluated. This research also includes a representative case study to illustrate the use of the decision support model. Although the case study addresses Wright-Patterson AFB, the model can be applied to any Department of Defense Installation

    Space Rescue has been a topic of speculation for a wide community of people for decades. Astronauts, aerospace engineers, diplomats, medical and rescue professionals, inventors and science fiction writers have all speculated on this problem. Martin Caidin's 1964 novel Marooned dealt with the problems of rescuing a crew stranded in low earth orbit. Legend at the Johnson Space Center says that Caidin's portrayal of a Russian attempt to save the American crew played a pivotal role in convincing the Russians to join the real joint Apollo-Soyuz mission. Space Rescue has been a staple in science fiction television and movies portrayed in programs such as Star Trek, Stargate-SG1 and Space 1999 and movies such as Mission To Mars and Red Planet. As dramatic and as difficult as rescue appears in fictional accounts, in the real world it has even greater drama and greater difficulty. Space rescue is still in its infancy as a discipline and the purpose of this chapter is to describe the issues associated with space rescue and the work done so far in this field. For the purposes of this chapter, the term space rescue will refer to any system which allows for rescue or escape of personnel from situations which endanger human life in a spaceflight operation. This will span the period from crew ingress prior to flight through crew egress postlanding. For the purposes of this chapter, the term primary system will refer to the spacecraft system that a crew is either attempting to escape from or from which an attempt is being made to rescue the crew

    Probing the ejecta of evolved massive stars in transition: A VLT/SINFONI K-band survey

    Massive evolved stars in transition phases, such as Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), B[e] Supergiants (B[e]SGs), and Yellow Hypergiants (YHGs), are not well understood, and yet crucial steps in determining accurate stellar and galactic evolution models. The circumstellar environments of these stars reveal their mass-loss history, identifying clues to both their individual evolutionary status and the connection between objects of different phases. Here we present a survey of 25 such evolved massive stars (16 B[e]SGs, 6 LBVs, 2 YHGs, and 1 Peculiar Oe star), observed in the K-band with the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observation in the Near-Infrared (SINFONI; R = 4500) on the ESO VLT UT4 8 m telescope. The sample can be split into two categories based on spectral morphology: one group includes all of the B[e]SGs, the Peculiar Oe star, and two of the LBVs, while the other includes the YHGs and the rest of the LBVs. The difference in LBV spectral appearance is due to some objects being in a quiescent phase and some objects being in an active or outburst phase. CO emission features are found in 13 of our targets, with first time detections for MWC 137, LHA 120-S 35, and LHA 115-S 65. From model fits to the CO band heads, the emitting regions appear to be detached from the stellar surface. Each star with ^12CO features also shows ^13CO emission, signaling an evolved nature. Based on the level of ^13C enrichment, we conclude that many of the B[e]SGs are likely in a pre-Red Supergiant phase of their evolution. There appears to be a lower luminosity limit of log L/L_solar = 5.0 below which CO is not detected. The lack of CO features in several high luminosity B[e]SGs and variability in others suggests that they may in fact be LBV candidates, strengthening the connection between these two very similar transition phases.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables.     Does Weight Matter?: Prospective Examination of Premorbid Body Weight as a Predictor of Eating Pathology

    Despite years of research on eating disorders, their persisting prevalence suggests limited efficacy of current prevention efforts and establishes the need for the identification of additional risk and maintenance factors. Predominant conceptualizations of eating disorders have placed continued emphasis on psychosocial factors associated with eating pathology. As such, the role of actual body weight has received limited attention, and relevant relationships between these factors and eating disorder development remain elusive. Preliminary evidence has identified elevated premorbid body weights in eating disorder patients, suggesting that these individuals may be biologically predisposed to higher weights and that this predisposition may be a factor relevant to subsequent eating disorder development. The current study sought to examine whether higher premorbid body weights prospectively predict subsequent clinical status in a sample of female eating disorder inpatients. By examining body weight in relation to subsequent symptom severity, the current study sought to establish premorbid body weight as a factor relevant to the development of eating pathology. Results indicated a significant relationship between highest premorbid z-BMI and self-reported Eating Concerns at treatment intake, though this relationship was not significant when accounting for current BMI. There was also a marginally significant interaction between premorbid z-BMI and current weight, such that those with a higher current BMI and a history of relatively lower highest premorbid z-BMI exhibited the greatest eating and weight concerns.     Quality maintenance performance and resistance to Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella penetration of an alternative packaging material for semolina

    Insect attacks to food packages are a major concern for food producers, who are often blamed for being responsible for the occurrence of contamination which seriously affects the image of the company. Wheat semolina is commonly packed in paper bags, which do not always offer sufficient protection against insect pests. The present research evaluated the performance of a new packaging alternative, consisting of paper laminated with polypropylene (P+CPP), in terms of resistance to penetration by two common cereal product pests, namely Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella, and quality maintenance of the packaged product. Neither of the two pest species tested were able to pierce the P+CPP, while no differences were observed in the time required to penetrate other materials. Moreover, quality parameters, namely pH, acidity and color, did not differ significantly among samples packed in different materials. The new P+CPP combination is a promising alternative for the packaging of semolina, because it offers improved protection against pests compared with conventional materials, while maintaining the paper appearance of traditional packaging

    HYDROCARBONS REMOVAL FROM BILGE WATER BY ADSORPTION ONTO ACTIVATED BIOCHAR FROM POSIDONIA OCEANICA

    The normal operations carried out on the boats during navigation generate waste waters such as oily bilge water. The latter is the aqueous mixture of potential pollutants of different origins and types: oily fluids, lubricants and greases, cleaning fluids and other wastes that accumulate in the lower part of the vessel [1,2]. The current legislation provides that they can be discharge directly into the sea if the concentrations of some components are below the expected limits. In particular, with regard to oil / hydrocarbons contamination, the current regulatory limit is 15 mg L-1 of total hydrocarbons. The present work starts from a public/private partnership funded by a grant of the Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE). Among the aims of the project, novel methods shall be tested for the reduction of hydrocarbons concentration at values below 5 mg L-1. Moreover, instrumental techniques able to quickly measure the required low hydrocarbons concentration were tested. Among the different steps of bilge water treatment in pilot plant (coagulation, flotation, centrifugation, adsorption etc.), the latter requires the use of adsorbent materials able to reduce the oily concentration below the legal limits. Here we have hosen, optimized and tested materials obtained from bio-oil production waste, a biochar obtained by pyrolysis of Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant widespread in the Mediterranean sea. means of acid or alkali treatments. Moreover, a commercial activated carbon (Filtrasorb 400) has been used for comparison purpose. Synthetic bilge waters were prepared following the reference standards [3] for the preparation of test fluids (used to test the bilge separator plant), containing DMA (distillate marine fuel) and SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). Batch adsorption isotherms were carried out without ionic medium and at different ionic strengths in NaCl in order to evaluate the effect of salinity on the adsorption ability of dsorbent materials. The same adsorbents were tested by column experiments. In particular, a bench pilot system was built (Figure 1.) and breakthrough curves were obtained changing amount of adsorbent material in column, flow rate, initial DMA and surfactant concentrations. Several instrumental techniques (turbidimetry, TOC, HPLC-QQQ and HPLC-FLD) have been used to measure surfactant and hydrocarbon concentrations in experimental samples. The batch experimental data were fitted with the most used isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips) and important considerations were made on the breakthrough curves of column experiments

    Control of Plasma Flux Composition Incident on TiN Films during reactive Magnetron Sputtering and the Effect on Film Microstructure

    A hybrid plasma enhanced physical vapor deposition (PEPVD) system consisting of an unbalanced dc magnetron and a pulsed electron beam-produced plasma was used to deposit reactively sputtered titanium nitride thin films. The system allowed for control of the magnitudes of the ion and neutral flux, in addition to the type of nitrogen ions (atomic or molecular) that comprised the flux. For all deposition experiments, the magnitude of the ion flux incident on the substrate was held constant, but the composition of the total flux was varied. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy showed that crystallographic texture and surface morphology of the films were affected by the plasma flux composition during growth
